Wow! Thanks for sharing your story. You've had quite a roller coaster of events. Yes, I do believe that it is possible for a food addict to use the lap band--it will take a lot of work, but it can be done. It will be essential to continue working with a therapist and see a dietitian so you can manage all aspects of a food addiction: physical and emotional. If you do that, I think it could work for you. My Intentional Eating Class would be a perfect fit for you. It starts in a few weeks. I would love to speak to you more privately. Feel free to contact me via email or phone by going to my "contact" page.

Hi Kelli,
Got your info from Ann Williams L.P.C. in Beaumont. I am a 46 yr. old female, 305 lb food addict. I have been some form of overweight all my life - at my heaviest for the 2nd time in my life. The first time was 5 yrs ago before the lap band surgery - also 305. I could have had the gastric by-pass 10 or more years ago (insurance didn't pay for lap band at that time) but I didn't like all the side effects -- co-workers and friends became "green" from "dumping", & developed health problems I considered worse than being overweight - for my age. I decided on the lap band because after years of fad & yo-yo diets (weight watchers, fat flush, sugar busters, atkins, south beach, etc.), exercising till exhaustion and injury, the latest will power/self help/mind control techniques - I was not keeping the weight off.....Lost 100 lbs the first 3 yrs after lap band - mostly by not eating - because I would throw up after taking 1 or 2 bites more than I should have, then being afraid to eat for a few days due to the fear of throwing up. That cycle ended 2 yrs ago with an exceptionally violent throw up event that caused slight slippage of the band and prolapse of the lower stomach up into the small pouch above the band - was told the band had to be removed, and until insurance ok'd the band removal surgery, all of the saline was removed. Then it was as if I had no constriction, and I went hog wild eating like a hog......Due to reasons beyond my control - doctors leaving this area and insurance issues - it took a year to find out that my band is actually o.k. - it just needs to be filled back up, AND I have stop over stuffing the small pouch. And there lies my problem - I still do not want the gastric by-pass, or the latest marvel the gastric sleeve, both of which I'm being told I should seriously consider since the lap band hasn't worked....I have no major health problems (yet) so I want to learn how to work with the tool I have - the lap band. Is it possible for a food addict to learn how to use the lab band ???????

Kelli,

Obviously I can't come to your free class but I would like to hear what you have to say. Did you say that there is a recording, and if so, I would like to listen to it. I am always looking for ways to improve myself.

Luv,
Mom

Someone asked me what was on the plate. There is a homemade corn muffin and homemade bean dip. My recipe for bean dip is super easy: drain and rinse your favorite canned beans, puree in blender with a little added water, and add your favorite seasonings (garlic, cumin, salt, etc.). Tasty with baked chips, on a whole wheat tortilla, or as a vegetable dip.
