It’s time to sleep, but you are in your kitchen to find something to munch. This is not an uncommon problem. Many people crave for midnight snacks. If in spite of a healthy dinner you crave for snacks at midnight then it’s not because you are hungry, it may be due to other problems like stress, anxiety, boredom or lack of sleep. The reasons vary from individual to individual. Many people can control their eating habits during the day, but it’s very difficult to curb it during night.

But beware, these late night snacks can lead to some serious problems. Usually midnight snacks result in an increase in your weight, which leads to obesity. Obesity is the cause of many health related problems like diabetes, unhealthy cholesterol levels, heart disease, joint problems, back pain etc. But the main problem is how to overcome midnight munching.

Here are some tips:

  1. Don’t skip meals: Don’t miss any meals during the day. Take all your meals for the day at the right time, of the right quality, and right quantity. Balanced diet is the key.
  2. Indulge in creative activities: Try to distract yourself from food by doing other activities like reading a book, or having a nice relaxing bath.
  3. Eat healthy snacks: If you can’t stop yourself from eating, then eat healthy, low calorie food.
  4. Be physically active during the day: If you increase physical activities during the day, you will get tired at the end of the day and you will fall asleep easily.
  5. Go to sleep on time: If you go to sleep late at night, your body will use energy to stay awake, which will lead to craving for food.
  6. Drink beverages: A few drinks like herbal tea or juice before bed can help in curbing your cravings.
  7. Relaxation techniques: Midnight munching can also occur due to stress. Use relaxation techniques like yoga or a hot bath. This will help you to relax your body and have a good nights sleep.
  8. Eat a balanced diet: Make a balanced diet plan. You can consult a nutritionist, who will help you in tracking your appetite for various food items.
  9. Avoid watching television late at night: Sitting sluggishly in front of the TV can make you hungry, and will tempt you to eat something. It’s better to go to sleep and rest peacefully.
  10. Avoid junk food: Junk food is full of harmful preservatives. Prolonged consumption is harmful.
  11. Brush your teeth: Brushing your teeth 2 or 3 hours after dinner can reduce your craving for snacks at midnight.
  12. Keep yourself busy until your bed time: Try to keep yourself busy in some creative activities after dinner, this will help you avoid eating after dinner.

Many people have the habit of having late night snacks. But you have to understand that it is not good for your health. At night the calorie requirement of the body is at a minimum, so adding extra calories to your body will be troublesome for your health. It’s not difficult to curb your temptations, with proper diet and schedule you can get rid of your midnight snacks.
